Fictions of interiority
Issue edited by Alexandre Gefen and Dominique Rabaté

For the past several years, it has often been noted that contemporary literature returned to spaces that had been abandoned: the family, the social sphere, historical events both large and small. Accordingly, in La Littérature française au présent, Dominique Viart and Bruno Vercier include three entries under the heading “Renewed Questions”: “Writing the Self,” “Writing History,” and “Writing the World.” In this issue of Fixxion, we would like to suggest another approach, one that focuses on the representation of interiority, on the novel’s ability to represent inner life, an aptitude that Dorrit Cohn viewed as a defining characteristic of fiction, and Eric Auerbach considered to be the horizon of the Western novel.

“We cannot assume any psychology on this earth. Becoming an individual means desiring, becoming conflicted, becoming infinitely, relentlessly divisible. Becoming more and more torn,” Pascal Quignard writes. Indeed, it seems as though the rise of the novel of the real, openly documentarian and polyphonic, with its emphasis on the strangeness, the opacity, the mobility, and the plurality of the self, or even its monstrosity, skeptically questioning narrative identity, has profoundly transformed the question of interiority, to the point that it might be described as an interiority without interiority. But while the modern novel is indissociable from the formulas it uses to convey inner life in all its complexity, this is surely because that life hasn’t disappeared in the flattened world of contemporary narratives, with their diffracted and speculative voices. These are narratives in which we sometimes struggle to discern the frontiers of reality and its representations, of the intimate and the extimate, of the self and the other. Isn’t it true that we find it in those novels that serve as a site of reflection on ordinary and extraordinary morality, a source of knowledge about the world, as in the inner polyphonies of Maylis de Kérangal or Mathias Énard? Isn’t it at stake in narratives that explore emotion, affect, and sensitivity, through non-phenomenological problematics? What about attempts to explore the psyche of those who are voiceless, marginalized? What forms are proposed by such diverse authors as Olivier Cadiot, Régis Jauffret, François Bon, Chloé Delaume, Olivia Rosenthal, or Marie NDiaye to infiltrate and reconstitute those voices? What about the heritage of writers like Sarraute and Simon whose psycho-narratives were excluded from a certain Nouveau Roman that played surface against depth? Does the francophone world offer distinctive examples of interiority on the basis of its specific formulations of inner identity? And what is the response from the neurohumanities, which appear to have become the dominant theoretical paradigm for the interpretation of our souls?

It is thus this “life of the psyche” that concerns us in this issue of Fixxion. It will not be centered on the writing of the self, autobiographically or autofictionally, which was the theme of issue four. Rather, it will focus on the French novel’s proposed technical solutions to the problem of the literary representation of mental life. We will look for interpretive paths toward this fundamental aspect of the novel by examining the renewal of the monologue, the finalities of polyphony, the analysis of the enunciative play of subjectivities, and the attempt to share the secret of individuality. Concern for inner life does not necessarily mean a return to the good old methods of the traditional psychological novel; rather, it is the new practices that we wish to highlight, though they may be inscribed in a lineage or a revealing literary intertext. This perspective will allow us to examine a variety of works; in addition to the names listed above, our corpus could include such authors as Arno Bertina, Nicole Caligaris, Jean-Paul Goux, Michel Houellebecq, Marie-Hélène Lafon, Hélène Lenoir, Laurent Mauvignier, Patrick Modiano, Wajdi Mouawad, Antoine Volodine, and Julie Wolkenstein.

We will prioritize a theoretical approach, informed by contemporary narratology, sociology, and philosophy of the subject, or at least a transversal reflection. Rather than simple case studies, we are looking for papers that will use a specific example or group of texts to illuminate the mechanisms and the enunciative and narrative forms of the always problematic literary representation of interiority, whose current mode of existence and specific traits we wish to examine.
