Judging Petrarch’s Lyric Poems in Renaissance Italy
Organizer: Maiko Favaro (University of Fribourg/Freiburg)

Exploring the reception of Petrarch in Renaissance Italy is a very difficult task due to its several ramifications as well as the large number of texts involved. It is no accident that Carlo Dionisotti was able to publish a masterful essay on Petrarch’s reception in the 15th century, but he did not release an analogous paper for the 16th century (although he worked on such a paper). This panel aims to offer a contribution on this subject by focusing on critical reflections on Petrarch’s lyric poems, including commentaries, reflections in the paratext of editions of the Canzoniere, academic lectures on single poems by Petrarch (such as the many lectures delivered by Benedetto Varchi and by other members of the Accademia Fiorentina), remarks on some broader aspects of Petrarch’s poetry (such as praise or criticism of Petrarch as a lover: see for example the Discorso by Pietro Cresci in the edition of the Canzoniere published by Francesco Barezzi in 1592), and so on. Preference will be given to papers dealing with the 16thcentury, but proposals on other periods (until 1700) may also be considered.
Proposals, to be submitted to maiko.favaro@unifr.ch by June 1st 2015, must include (in accordance with RSA rules): 1. paper title (15-word maximum); 2. abstract (150-word max.); 3. Keywords; 4. CV (300-word max.; NB prose bios are not accepted). Please note that the RSA limits word count and will not accept entries that go beyond the maximum limit.
