Decepción, surprise, colère et furia. Exploration d’une méthode statistique en lexicologie

This article presents a corpus-based approach to the comparison of partial synonyms on an intra- and cross-linguistic level. The methodology is demonstrated using the example of three lexical fields in French and Spanish, all from the domain of the lexis of emotion: SURPRISE, DISAPPOINTMENT, ANGER. After the intralinguistic analysis of French surprise/étonnement/stupeur and Spanish decepción/desencanto/desilusión/desengaño, the investigation is extended to include a cross-linguistic comparison of French colère/fureur with Spanish cólera/furia. As a first step, data that reveals the combinatory behaviour of the analysed lexical items is extracted from a corpus containing comparable quantities of French and Spanish literary and newspaper texts. The co-occurrences thus obtained are then divided into categories of lexical dimensions, e. g. intensity (furia desatada, honda decepción) or causation of emotion (déchaîner la colère, provoquer de la surprise), creating a «tertium comparationis» that allows for the comparison between partial synonyms or presumed equivalents in different languages. Finally, the actual analysis is performed using ÉmoGgrammes – an instrument based on descriptive statistics allowing to aggregate and represent the results graphically. This heuristic method has proven particularly helpful in the complex folds of cross-linguistic comparison.

PAUL GÉVAUDAN
Variadas y a veces inexplicables transformaciones. Spanisch que als Konnektor, Diskursmarker und Abtönungspartikel

In Spanish the conjunction of subordination que may also introduce main sentences. Aside from optative sentences introduced by que which are common to Romance languages, peninsular Spanish has several special uses of que-introduced sentences which have been accounted for as ‘emphatic’, ‘reiterative’ and ‘explicative’. The present contribution puts these intuitive accounts into a broader theoretical framework and shows that we are dealing with usages of que as connector, discourse marker and modal particle. This observation results from the analysis of the semantic-pragmatic functions of these usages based on a three-dimensional model of meaning which includes locutionary meaning besides propositional and illocutionary meaning. According to this model, locutionary meaning relates to the actual discourse. Now, it can be shown that the so called emphatic, reiterative and explicative uses of que as introducer of main sentences are locutionary in the sense that they refer to previous utterances of the actual discourse. Therefore, we may also talk about dialogical uses of que in these kinds of sentences.

SANDRA LHAFI
Ein pragmalinguistischer Ansatz zur Beschreibung von Verbalperiphrasen im Spanischen am Beispiel von « ir a + infinitivo »

Apart from the problem of reaching a consensus on a definition, linguists tend to describe the semantic effects of the Spanish verbal periphrases on a «local way», i. e. without taking into account the text and the context in which those appear. The result is the development of heterogeneous «meaning-lists», which seems quite disappointing, since it leads to hiding the common semantic denominator. The goal of this paper is to propose a functional description of the Spanish verbal periphrasis « ir a + infinitive ». It aims at explaining the different interpretations that arise, which are not (or rarely) analysed thoroughly (even though often mentioned). The hypothesis advanced in this paper is that the argumentative context, where the verbal periphrasis appears, determines the development of the respective semantic effects. This paper is part of an investigation that will take into account other Spanish verbal periphrases. Its ultimate aim is to establish an alternative explanation of the so called pragmatic effects assigned to these analytical verbal constructions which play a central role within the Spanish language.

Los coordinadores disyuntivos latín et aut > castellano do > vasco edo: una historia inadvertida

The relationship between the conjunctive coordinator ʻand’ and the disjunctive coordinator ʻor’ in natural languages constitutes the theoretical framework for this research, which examines its expression in Latin, medieval Castilian and Basque. The study reveals two disjunctive coordinators which have so far not been registered in literature on the subject, the Latin pleonasm et aut and the medieval Castilian do, and we analyse their relationship with the Basque edo, still very much alive today, but whose origin has not so far found a satisfactory explanation. The theoretical arguments and empirical data allow us to defend the historical sequence – Latin et aut > medieval Castilian do > Basque edo –, and to focus attention on the problems posed by the conceptual dichotomies conjunction/disjunction and inclusive/exclusive disjunction for the description of semantic relationship contained under the term «coordination».

Marcas de uso en el Diccionario de colocaciones del español

The main purpose of this paper is to explain the application of usage labels in the Diccionario de colocaciones del español (DiCE), an online dictionary of Spanish collocations. The first part of the paper offers a brief description of the dictionary, before moving on to examine how the attributes of a stylistically marked base or collocate are projected onto the collocation as a whole. The architecture of DiCE allows us to provide information about collocation use in relation to both base and collocate, thereby allowing users – especially learners – to select the combination best suited to their particular purpose. The next section deals with the type of socio-pragmatic information included in the usage labels for DiCE (this list is currently under review), followed by a detailed account of diaphasic marking and diaevaluative marking, and the usage labels within those categories (formal, informal, vulgar, euphemistic and pejorative). The final section examines the possibility of including ironic as a label in DiCE.

El Vocalismo tónico y los principales fenómenos que lo afectan en un habla gallega del sureste de la provincia de Ourense (España)

This research, which has been carried out by means of surveys and recordings, delimits the seven vowel phonemes in tonic position of a variety of Galician spoken in the south-east of the province of Ourense, Spain. Prior to the analysis, we describe the geographical area of the study, and we present the objectives, methodology and theoretical framework of the research. The rest of the paper proves that the studied variety does not always show a metaphonic influence of -Ŭ and that it converges with eastern Galician dialects in terms of not closing the sound Ĕ when followed by a nasal, and with non-northeastern Galician dialects in terms of closing the sound Ŏ when followed by a nasal. In addition, the analyzed variety does not show metaphonic influence of -a. Finally, we argue that the variants mazaira (apple tree) and aira (threshing floor) are not found in the same territory in present-day Galician.

GIANLUCA VALENTI
Tradurre il lessico scientifico. Alcuni casi di prestiti e neologismi in tre versioni in lingue romanze del De proprietatibus rerum di Bartolomeo Anglico

The present paper gives an overview about an ongoing research focused on the analysis of the translations of the medical lexicon contained in the Medieval Latin encyclopaedia De proprietatibus rerum in three Romance languages. The three translations are: Trattato di scienza universal (written in the dialect of Mantua); Elucidari de las proprietatz de totas res naturals (Occitan); Livre des proprietés des choses (Middle French). Specifically, the paper deals with the translation of two technical words, Lat. arteria and Lat. ventriculus. It shows that different stylistic strategies were adopted by the translators in order to express in their languages the terms, which – in the 14th century – were still unknown in vernacular speech.

TOBIAS LEUKER
Spätfrucht mit besonderem Aroma. Hugues Salels Chant royal de la Conception de la Vierge Marie

The article offers an interpretation of one of the latest chants royaux written by a prominent poet, Hugues Salel’s Chant royal de la Conception de la Vierge Marie, printed in 1540. In this poem, the French author constantly identifies the zodiacal sign of the Virgin, normally related to Astraea, with the Virgin Mary. This idea is probably derived from an allegorical encyclopaedia written in the 14th century by a Benedictine monk, the Repertorium morale of Pierre Bersuire. In this book, Salel may also have noted some judgements about Cancer and Scorpion, which seem to motivate the hostile attitude of both signs towards (the) Virgin narrated in the third stanza of his poem. Beside the originality of its invention, the Chant royal de la Conception de la Vierge Marie merits special attention for its dogmatic content: contrary to the vast majority of Marian chants royaux, which were composed to support the Franciscan thesis of the Virgin’s Immaculate Conception, Salel’s text joins the Dominican position according to which Mary was not born without sins, but purified by the Holy Spirit while conceiving Jesus Christ.

CHRISTIAN SCHMITT
Zur Herkunft von Französisch planquer

The author discusses the etymology of Fr. planquer, that originally meant ʻto hide, to conceal’. It is shown that the word – in contrast to previous etymological approaches –is connected with Lat. planca ʻboard, plank’. As a result, the entries phalanx, plantare, placken, etc., in the FEW and in other etymological dictionaries must be revised.

JOAQUÍN BUSTAMANTE COSTA
El romance andalusí šūnuh y el simbúscalo andaluz y extremeño

The Andalusi botanical encyclopedia entitled ˁUmdat aṭ-ṭabīb can be attributed with a high degree of certainty to Abū l-Ḫayr al-ˀIšbīlī, born in Seville in the eleventh century. The text includes the Andalusi Romance word šūnuh ‘dream’, which is the equivalent of the Andalusi Arabic ǧawz an-nuˁās ‘sleep nut’. In the recent edition of the ˁUmdat aṭ-ṭabīb (Bustamante/Corriente/Tilmatine 2004–2010), this word has been translated wrong: the authors adopted an earlier interpretation that identified šūnuh with the fruit of the mangosteen. This paper defines the true meaning of this word, that is not related to a plant, but to the egg case of the Praying mantis. Furthermore, a new etymology is proposed for the colloquial word simbúscalo, which in Andalusia and Extremadura is used with the same meaning as šūnuh.

MARCO BIANCHI
Il dire galileiano per titoli. Una nota lessicale su Il Saggiatore

The importance of Galileo’s use of language is well known. He also paid particular attention to the titling of his works. This paper shows that the only correct acceptation of the title Il Saggiatore (1623) is ‘the man who assays’ and not ‘assay balance’, as generally interpreted (the ambiguity, too, is not possible). We reach this conclusion on the basis of different elements, such as the discussion of the historical usage of the word, the historical semantics of the suffix -tore and contemporary interpretations. Furthermore the paper explains the stylistic potential of that title and its conceptual allusions.

Türkische Wortgeschichte im Spiegel europäischer Quellen

With his edition of the Turkish-Latin glossary included in Giovan Battista Montalbano’s Turcicae linguae per terminos latinos educta syntaxis, Luciano Rocchi has provided another important contribution to pre-Meninskian Ottoman-Turkish lexicography. The present review gives an overview of the state of the art of Turkish historical lexicography, emphasizing the fact that Turkisms in early Italian and other European sources often furnish important supplementary information on the history of Turkish words.
