A major issue in the history of the French language that has remained open until today concerns the nature of the French used by the royal institutions in Paris, especially the Royal Chancery, which is the most important. The completion of the full edition of 120 French documents that we identified as coming from the Parisian Royal Chancery enables us, for the first time, to analyze more closely the question posed in the title of this article – How did the Royal French Chancery write in the 13th century ? – on an empirical rather than a speculative basis. On a macro-linguistic level, it appears that in the 13th century, the Royal Chancellery was far from being a «monolingual» institution, even regarding the use of the vernacular language : next to documents written in a decidedly «central» French, in some particular situations also Picard is used. On a micro-linguistic level, it results that the internal variation of the «central» French used by the Royal Chancery constantly decreases during the 13th century, but that even at the end of this period, some residual variation remains clearly observable.

Encore sur «l’altra faccia del trobar»: lecture d’une cobla de Garin d’Apchier (Membria·us del jornal, P.-C. 443, 3)

Saverio Guida has recently published an article concerning the polemical exchange between the Gévaudan troubadours Garin d’Apchier and Torcafol, describing it, rightly, as the «other side of the art of trobar ». An analysis of one of the poems in this cycle (a ten-line cobla composed by Garin d’Apchier) allows us to be more precise about what it meant by this term. The thematic ― carnaval-like ― putting-forward of lower bodily activity, against a poetic system already perceived as sclerotic, is accompanied in Garin’s case by a sophisticated and ludic conception of writing as linguistic play on language itself. The article includes in an annex an edition of this cobla.

In this paper we identify the medieval Latin commentary of Frate Lucas as the main primary source of a section of quotes which the Rams de Flores, compiled in the scriptorium of Juan Fernández de Heredia, takes from Valerius Maximus’ Dictorum factorumque memorabilium. This section of the Rams often departs from the text of Valerius collecting almost literally the comments of Lucas and, to a lesser extent, the comments of Dionisius de Borgo Santo Sepolcro. These two expositions are also the source of the numerous passages added by the Dictorum ’s Catalan translation written by Antoni Canals. This explains the similarity between the Aragonese text and Canals’ work. Even so, the different treatment of glosses makes us think that the intermediate source of Rams is not Canals’ translation but a previous Catalan version, currently lost.

The main objective of this paper is the analysis of the different first person plural allomorphs existing in the Romance languages of the Iberian Peninsula, given the absence of studies of this pronominal form. Our conclusions are based on data obtained from the Linguistic Atlas of the Iberian Peninsula (ALPI) and other later 20th century atlases such as ALEA, ALEANR, ALGA and ALEC-MAN. The results show a wide diversity of non-standard forms to express a first person plural. Some of them are indeed influenced by other phenomena attested in the second person plural. Interestingly, while Castilian variants have suffered a regression, the Portuguese language has developed an innovation which has removed the current normative pronoun.

«Yo creo que sí hay. Lo único es que no lo sé»: política lingüística mexicana y su percepción en Yucatán

This article deals with the language situation in the Yucatec peninsula in southern Mexico. As Mexico can be considered a highly heterogeneous country with an extraordinary cultural and linguistic diversity, language policy has always been a complex challenge for the Mexican government. During the last twenty years, there have been significant legal changes and adaptations in order to protect and to revive Mexican indigenous languages. In this contribution, we concentrate on some impacts of the national language policy in the Yucatec context and present some exemplary results of a qualitative analysis based on interviews with Maya and non-Maya speakers in Mérida, Yucatán. What do they know and think about the Mexican governments’ initiatives? Are there any visible changes concerning the functions, the prestige and the perception the interviewees have of the languages spoken in Yucatán and of their speakers? We conclude this article with a few closing remarks at the speakers’ prediction concerning the vitality of Yucatec Maya and the interviewees’ needs and suggestions for a successful and sustainable revitalization.

FERNANDO BRISSOS

The traditional view on Portuguese central-southern dialects (CS) considers the existence of two idiosyncratic areas in the central-interior and southwestern parts of the country which break CS’ general homogeneity. Brissos (2014) however, presents acoustic data from which can be seen that several linguistic phenomena, usually circumscribed to those two areas, indeed exist in other distant and scattered locales not encompassed in the standard area split. Additionally, Brissos/Saramago (2014) present auditory data which corroborate Brissos’ (2014) fundamental conclusions. These facts suggest a revision of the traditional overview of CS and demand further testing: an analysis of all remaining dialectal features of CS (and not only some specific phenomena) must be conducted. This paper thus presents an extensive corpus of the dialectal features existing in CS (comprising the same area analyzed by Brissos 2014) and carries on that analysis. A new overview of those dialects is proposed.‏

A linguistic sketch of Judeo-Piedmontese and what it tells us about Piedmontese Jews’ origins

Judeo-Piedmontese (also called Lason Akodesh) is a virtually extinct dialect spoken by the Jewish communities that settled in Piedmont from the 14th century onward. The article takes into account the two historical stages usually recognized for Judeo-Italian varieties, namely the Medieval and the Modern one. As regards Judeo-Piedmontese, the only testimony of the former period is the Glossario di Alba by Jacob ben Nathan de Olmo; while more data, still limited in quantity, is available for the Modern period. Through the analysis of some relevant morpho-syntactic traits, Judeo-Piedmontese is shown to be a conservative Piedmontese variety, exhibiting some interesting Provençal-Ligurian features. Thus, on the basis of linguistic data too, it is possible to claim that the Jewish communities that settled in Piedmont might have come from Provence and Liguria.

This paper aims to introduce the Greek Letters attributed to Marcus Junius Brutus as part of the lexicographical research on the assimilation of Classical (Greek and Latin) demonyms in Italian. The work is a collection of seventy short messages allegedly sent by Brutus to the Greek and Asian communities during the Roman civil war. In the last decades of the 15th century, Niccolò Angeli from Bucine translated them into Latin and into Italian. The tradition of the Italian translation is limited to one unedited manuscript, Firenze, Bibl. Riccardiana, Riccardiano 2692. Thanks to this volgarizzamento, we can antedate some of the demonyms recorded in the Deonomasticon Italicum (DI) ( lesbi ) and add some others missing in the DI
( caunii, coi, corycii, myrensi, patarei, ecc.).
