,Maria schon‘ is a shorter, but close-to-text anonymous version of the song ,Maria gut‘ that is well-known within the context of the ,Jetzerhandel‘. It includes the latter’s arguments in favor of the Immaculate Conception for Marian devotion. The text at hand was augmented by its poet, Schenk von Siemau, with detailed biblical, theological, canonical, poetic, and natural history citations confirming a strong Marian devotion, but only rarely confirming the dogma in question with its mixture of traditional and humanistic sources that are, however, typical of the early 16th century. The formal polishing and the emotional reference to Maria of the shorter version aim at popular effect and employ polemical phrases while emphasizing the theological role of the devil and the wrath of God, so that authorship by Thomas Murner ought to be reconsidered.

Wegweisungen zum Lesen in England (1900 – 1945)
Von Günther Blaicher (Eichstätt)

The widespread digital euphoria and the concomitant transformation of traditional ways of communication in our time, in particular the weakening of habits of reading by the achievements of digital competence, have put in the shade the age-old tradition of writing essays and of delivering public lectures on the pleasures and benefits of reading, practices that have been inscribed in this cultural tradition for centuries.
After some brief references to respective essays from the beginning of the eighteenth century to the Victorian Age, the present article focuses on the views and experiences of reading by some thirteen authors, among others by John M. Robertson, Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, Virginia Woolf, Hugh Walpole, Aldous Huxley, Walter de la Mare, with the aim of describing the richness and variety of their ideas about reading, as well as the emergence of specific problems (social advancement, memory, author-reader relation, life and literature) under the influence of changing social and cultural contexts during the first half of the twentieth century.
By and large, the guidance offered by elderly writers and readers to young people testifies to their trust in the universality and permanence of literary works that have stood the test of time. This classical stance, however, is broken up by an occasional “slumming expedition” and by a growing scepticism concerning the usefulness of reading lists, nourished by the recognition of the unavoidable subjectivity of the reading process and the active participation of the reader in the construction of meaning. At the same time the acceleration of modern life was felt to present a danger to the habit of reading, thus adumbrating present-day concerns. Owing to the crisis of culture after the Great War and during the 1930s, the essays reveal a nostalgic penchant for the literature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and a surprising discovery of “a clearer perception” of life and “a superior reality” through literature.

Von Thomas Ollig (Frankfurt a.M.)

The Deutsche Bücherei in Leipzig, one of two predecessors to today’s Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, is tied up like no other cultural institution with the fate of Germany in the twentieth century. It is the library with the closest relationship with the German state. Nevertheless, it was founded by the Börsenverein der Deutschen Buchhändler (German Publishers and Booksellers Association), and it was brought under public manage ment at a relatively late stage. In 1990, it was united with its equivalent institution in West Germany.
This article takes the publication of two foundational studies of its history as an opportunity to examine some stages of that history in a new light. The period from 1912 to 1945 (portrayed by Sören Flachowsky) reveals an increasing politicization of the work of the Deutsche Bücherei. It was not only at the service of the Nazi regime, but also part of the system. Even in the period between 1945 and 1990 (portrayed by Christian Rau), the Deutsche Bücherei, whose collection mandate encompassed the totality of literature published in the German language, acted as a figurehead of a national culture now defined by the Socialist Party. At the same time, it tried to fulfill the expectations made of a research library. In doing so, the library found itself confronted with contradictions.
