Representações das violências coloniais nas literaturas africanas subsaarianas

Cada sociedade define que tipo de violência é proibido, mas também permitido e até pertinente. Assim, as violências apresentam uma historicidade, o seu estatuto legal e a sua aceitabilidade social mudam ao longo dos tempos. Ao debruçarmo-nos sobre este tema, deparamo-nos com uma multiplicidade de definições oriundas de uma vasta gama de disciplinas académicas. Violência física, psicológica, sexual, económica, etc. são só alguns dos conceitos utilizados para sistematizar situações violentas em diferentes contextos. As literaturas africanas subsaarianas têm dedicado especial atenção às violências coloniais, entendidas como um conjunto de violências diversas num contexto histórico dado, e à sua persistência na atualidade em contextos que apresentam novas caraterísticas. Este painel interessa-se pelas representações literárias das violências coloniais. Estudar-se-ão as mutações da violência inicial, a sua transformação em violências estruturais de natureza simbólica, cultural e física, e os seus legados. Pretende-se questionar a natureza destas violências de um ponto de vista ético, filosófico e legal e discutir em que medida essas representações permitem compreender a realidade dessas regiões na era da globalização neoliberal e de ameaças ecológicas. A comparação permitirá esboçar uma história transnacional e pluridisciplinar destas literaturas para pensá-las fora das grelhas tradicionais de interpretação ancoradas no Estado-nação, língua e/ou esfera de influência (pós-)colonial. Convidamos à submissão de propostas de comunicação numa perspetiva comparada, pluridisciplinar e pós-colonial que analisem produções literárias, e que se fundamentem teoricamente em estudos sobre a violência. Visamos igualmente comunicações sobre as permanências e transformações das diferentes formas de violência ao longo tempo e seus impactos na atualidade, nomeadamente nos conflitos político-sociais do período pós-colonial, nos processos migratórios e nas catástrofes ecológicas do presente.

As propostas podem ser submetidas em português, francês, inglês e espanhol.

Representations of colonial violence in sub-Saharan African literatures

Each society defines which types of violence are prohibited and which are permitted and even legitimate. Thus, violence is historical: its legal status and social acceptability change over time. As we look into this area, we come across a multitude of definitions proceeding from a wide range of academic disciplines. Physical, psychological, sexual, economic violence, among many others, are just some of the concepts used to systematize violent situations in different contexts. Sub-Saharan African literatures have paid particular attention to colonial violence, understood as a system of various forms of violence in a given historical context, and to their persistence today in contexts which display new characteristics. This panel examines the literary representations of colonial violence: the mutations underwent by original forms of violence, its transformation into structural violence bearing symbolic, cultural and physical dimensions, and its persistent legacies. It questions the nature of these forms of violence from an ethical, philosophical and legal point of view, and discusses to what extent these representations contribute to grasp the reality of these regions in the era of neoliberal globalization and ecological threats. The comparison enables us to outline a transnational and multidisciplinary history of these literatures outside the traditional frames of interpretation which are usually anchored in the (post) colonial nation-state, the (colonizer’s) language and / or sphere of influence. We welcome the submission of papers with a comparative, multidisciplinary and postcolonial perspective which examine literary productions and are theoretically based on studies of violence. We also welcome papers about the permanence and transformation of different forms of colonial violence over time and their impact on the present, namely in post-colonial socio-political conflicts, migratory processes and ecological disasters.

Proposals can be submitted in English, Portuguese, French and Spanish.
