Ulderup Predoctoral Scholarships

Subject to approval of funds, the Romance Studies Department shall award up to three predoctoral scholarships of € 1,000.00 per month beginning on October 1st 2022 with a duration of six months and up to one year.

I. Target Group

The call for applications is aimed at young researchers transitioning from a master’s degree or an equivalent degree to a PhD who wish to prepare a proposal for a doctoral position or scholarship.

II. Prerequisites

• An outstanding university degree, normally a MA in Romance Studies (linguistics/literary studies) or equivalent;
• A project description (abstract) approximately half a page in length;
• A brief recommendation letter from a supervising professor from the Romance Studies Department of the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg (approximately half a page in length); please contact potential supervisors well in advance;
• Excellent knowledge of at least one Romance language, as well as of German and/or English, and
• Proof of course contents (for instance, a transcript of records).

III. Motivational Letter

The motivational letter should demonstrate the applicants’ willingness to familiarise themselves with the subject matter of their proposed PhD topic with the aim of producing a convincing application for a scholarship, or other funds, to conduct a doctoral research project at the Romance Studies Department of the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg.

IV. Amount and Duration of Funding

The basic scholarship is awarded for six months, with a monthly grant in the amount of € 1,000.00 each. After six months, an interim evaluation is conducted by the supervising professor at the Romance Studies Department of the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg. Subject to a positive interim evaluation and the finalisation of a doctoral agreement with a professor at the Romance Studies Department, there is a possibility for the scholarship to be extended for additional three months. In special cases another extension for further three months can be granted.

V. Awarding Scholarships

The scholarships shall be awarded by the Romance Studies Department, which is comprised of the six professors as well as the academic and administrative coordinators.

The Romance Studies Department strives to support women in academic careers and therefore particularly invites qualified female graduates to apply.
