Historically, the image of Latin America has been associated with emotional expression and the tensions with intellectual models emerged from Europe and the United States. Contemporary aesthetic discourses reveal that emotional logic is closely linked to current institutional processes in the media and arts. This interdisciplinary symposium will explore the cultural diversity of Latin America of this era through analysis of graphic novels, literary texts, films, dance and video blogs, among and other media. The focus will be on the artistic relevance of emotions in socio-political transformations in the recent past and present. The emotional content and impact of artistic interventions in relation to climatic, political, social and economic upheavals in Latin America will be discussed in terms of representation, production and reception.
The programme will include a reading and discussion with the Cuban author Karla Suárez, a live drawing by the Argentinian artist Nacha Vollenweider as well as the exhibition opening of “BorderLines – Emotions | LatinX-Comics | Aldama”, curated by Bettina Egger and Agustín Corti.
