16–18 November 2017, Technische Universität Chemnitz (Germany)

The cultural and linguistic diversity of the Iberian Peninsula (the Basque Country, Catalonia, Galicia, Spain and Portugal) calls for a redefinition of the national philological practices that goes beyond Portuguese and Spanish languages and literatures. Iberian Studies is an increasingly important research field that seeks to reflect the complexity of the Iberian Peninsula and analyse its different literatures, identities, cultures and history from a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective. Under the main theme “New Approaches and Research Practices in Iberian Studies”, the II Jornadas de Estudios Culturales Ibéricos will provide a discussion platform for all those working in the field in order to assess its horizons and challenges.

Contributions from academics and junior scholars of different disciplines such as Cultural Studies, History, Literary Studies or Sociology are welcome. Possible areas for exploration may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Theoretical approaches: paradigms and challenges of Iberian Studies
• Centre-periphery relations in the Iberian Peninsula
• Otherness, hybridity and migration
• Cultural transfer and cultural contact
• Iberian colonialisms, globalisation discourses through the ages
• Social movements and political transformation
• Cultures of memory
• Nationalism, nation-building and political conflicts

The conference will take place at Technische Universität Chemnitz, 16–18 November 2017. The 20-minute presentations can be held in Basque, Catalan, English, Galician, Portuguese or Spanish. Please submit a proposal of no more than 300 words, along with a CV including your contact data, by 28 February 2017 to nuria.codina-sola@phil.tu-chemnitz.de and thomas.weissmann@phil.tu-chemnitz.de.
