Asymmetric Nature(s) – Concerning the Historic Semantics of Transatlantic Environmental Relations during the 18th and the 19th century

Als Initiative innerhalb der Profillinie Mensch-Umwelt-Netzwerke der Universität Osnabrück will die Tagung einen interdisziplinären Blick auf die historische Semantik von Umweltverhältnissen richten. Mit Bezug auf Europa und die Amerikas schlägt sie dabei eine transatlantische Perspektive vor, die speziell auf das 18. und 19. Jahrhundert fokussiert. Ausgangspunkt ist die Feststellung, dass die historischen Mensch-Umwelt-Verhältnisse von grundlegenden Asymmetrien gekennzeichnet sind, die vielfach kolonialen Logiken und Ökonomien folgen. Die Tagung will zugrundeliegende Spannungsfelder in ihrem Einfluss auf Naturvorstellungen dies- und jenseits des Atlantiks beleuchten. Verstanden als heuristisches Konzept, kann der Begriff der Asymmetrie dazu dienen, epistemische und kulturelle, politische und semantische Unvereinbarkeiten zu konturieren, die sich noch in aktuellen Ressourcenkonflikten bemerkbar machen.
