The annual meeting of the Association of Portuguese and Spanish Lexified Creoles (ACBLPE) (http://acblpe.com/) will be held on the 1st to 3rd of July 2024, in the city of São Tomé (São Tomé and Príncipe), in partnership with the University of São Tomé and Príncipe (USTP) and the Portuguese Cultural Center (CCP), which will host the event. The meeting will be in person only.
São Tomé and Príncipe is an archipelago of significant linguistic interest, where the local Portuguese variety coexists with several Portuguese-related creoles, namely Forro, Angolar, Lung’ie and Caboverdean, with remnants of Bantu languages and so-called Tonga Portuguese.
São Tomé and Príncipe is one of the safest countries in Africa. Travelers to São Tomé must present a visa and yellow fever certificate. It is especially important to take the necessary precautions against malaria and gastrointestinal infections. Although the incidence of malaria has been substantially reduced with the program that foresees the eradication of this disease by 2027, it is advisable to take malaria prophylaxis (medication) or, at least, take maximum care between sunset and sunrise (trousers, closed shoes, use of insect repellent, etc.). In Early July, it is the dry season, the so-called “gravana”, with an average minimum temperature of 21 degrees and an average maximum of 28 degrees.
The city of São Tomé and the island in general have many points of interest that link history to languages, for example, the former coffee and cacao plantations. The organization of the meeting is planning a guided tour the day after the meeting (July 4th), so that participants can have contact with the past and present of the island.
We welcome proposals in the area of language contact involving Portuguese and/or Spanish in any part of the world, including proposals related to the varieties of Portuguese spoken in Africa, in particular in the field of education, as well as proposals related to the revitalization of minority creole languages. Accepted talks will have an estimated duration of 30 minutes.
Abstracts should be written in Portuguese, Spanish, French or English, with a limit of 500 words, excluding references and examples, and sent to acblpe@gmail.com in both Word and PDF, with the format: title – summary – (examples) – references. Do not include your name and affiliation in the abstract itself. The subject of the email should contain “Abstract ACBLPE 2024”; In the body of the email, include the following data: author(s), academic affiliation(s), email contact(s), title of the abstract.
