Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of the largest universities in Germany. The advertised position is part of the DFG Research Unit “Phonologically Weak Units: Acquisition, Pro-cessing and Modality” (FOR 5757), which investi-gates weak elements such as reduced syllables in language development and processing. The joint project led in Marburg comprises researchers from the Universities of Mannheim, Frankfurt, Mainz, and Erfurt as well as the Leibniz Institute for Lifelong Learning in Bonn and the Leibniz Institute for the German Language in Mannheim (https://gepris.dfg.de/gepris/projekt/531445091).

The sub-project “Sensitivity to reduced syllables in learners of L2 German and implications for grammatical learning” (https://gepris.dfg.de/gepris/projekt/556833103) is concerned with the acquisition and pro-cessing of reduction vowels in German as a foreign language by learners with different first languages (French, Italian, Turkish). The project is headed by Prof. Ulrike Domahs (Marburg) and Prof. Christoph Gabriel (Mainz) and offers exciting interdisciplinary approaches in the fields of phonetics, phonology, foreign-language learning, and neurolinguistics.

Your tasks:

  • Preparation and implementation of the collection of spoken production data
  • Coordination of the data collection in the partner laboratories
  • Phonetic analysis of vowels
  • Presentation of results at conferences and participation in scientific publications
  • Willingness to travel to France, Italy, and Turkey to collect data
  • Active participation in the events of the research group

Your profile:
In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in § 57 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate.

  • A successfully completed scientific university degree (Diplom, Master’s or comparable) in linguistics or phonetics or related subjects, provided they have a linguistic component (e.g., teaching degree in German)
  • Good knowledge of phonetics and phonology, an interest in neurolinguistics is desirable
  • Experience in handling and analyzing speech data
  • Very good knowledge of German and English (at least B2), knowledge of French, Italian and/or Turkish is an advantage
  • Independent and careful scientific working method, confidence in writing scientific texts and presentations as well as basic knowledge of statistics
  • Social skills, willingness to cooperate, ability to work under pressure during peak workloads and high motivation for a doctorate in the field of L2 acquisition
    The position is paid according to EG 13 TV-L and to be filled by 10/1/2025. The position is limited to a period of 4 years.

There is the possibility of a doctorate.
