Funded by an ERC Advanced Grant, the DramaNet research project at Freie Universität Berlin (PI: Prof. Joachim Küpper) seeks to investigate the global dissemination of European drama in early modern times while simultaneously exploring the theoretical concept of the cultural net – i.e. a medium that is being intentionally created in order to enable material things and immaterial ideas to “float” over spatial and temporal distances.

We would like to invite you very cordially to our upcoming conference, which takes place at Freie Universität Berlin on 29 and 30 April 2015.

Entitled “Poetics and Politics: Net Structures and Agencies in Early Modern Drama”, the conference will take a fresh look at early modern drama, promoting an approach that is informed by cultural history and stays thoroughly transnational in its focus. Individual contributions will draw attention to the academies in Spain before 1700 as well as operatic performances in eighteenth-century London; they will revisit religious processions in Slovenia as well as the “third space” of Anglo-Indian plays. The remarkable diversity of early modern drama, we wish to suggest, ties in with the notion of the cultural net as a medium that facilitates the flow of material and conceptual forms. On the one hand, this angle will allow for a critical revision of models and metaphors of cultural “exchange” or “circulation”. On the other hand, it helps chart the individual and institutional agencies that drive such processes whilst also highlighting the intricate interdependence of political, social and artistic practices.

The conference will be held in English. It is free to attend; registration is not required.

Unter der Leitung von Herrn Prof. Dr. Joachim Küpper (Freie Universität Berlin) untersucht das ERC-geförderte Forschungsprojekt „DramaNet“ die globale Dissemination frühneuzeitlicher europäischer Dramen anhand des theoretischen Postulats des kulturellen Netzes – eines bewusst kreierten Mediums, das die multidirektionale Ausbreitung von Dingen und Ideen unabhängig von ihren jeweiligen räumlichen und zeitlichen Ursprüngen ermöglicht. Die Konferenz mit dem Titel „Poetics and Politics: Net Structures and Agencies in Early Modern Drama“ rückt das frühneuzeitliche Drama in konsequent kulturhistorischer und transnationaler Perspektive in den Blick. Einzelne Beiträge führen an die spanischen Akademien vor 1700 und auf die Londoner Opernbühnen des 18. Jahrhunderts; slowenische Passionszüge finden ebenso Berücksichtigung wie anglo-indische Theaterstücke. Ziel ist es, die bemerkenswerte Vielfalt frühneuzeitlicher Dramen an den Grundgedanken des kulturellen Netzes als Trägermedium materieller und konzeptueller Formen rückzubinden. Dabei werden zum einen gängige Modelle und Metaphern des kulturellen „Austausches“ und der „Zirkulation“ kritisch hinterfragt; zum anderen sollen die individuellen und institutionellen Triebkräfte solcher Prozesse kartiert werden, bei denen zudem die komplexe Verzahnung politischer, sozialer und künstlerischer Praktiken zu Tage tritt.

Die Konferenz findet in englischer Sprache statt. Eine Anmeldung ist nicht erforderlich. Es wird keine Tagungsgebühr erhoben.
