Jena Master Class in Italian Studies 2015 with Robert Pogue Harrison (Stanford)

Wielandgut Oßmannstedt
21-24 June 2015

About the Master Class

If the love of God moves all things, as we learn in the first canto of the Divine Comedy, how do we account for the drive of transgression that plunges human souls into sin? Sin in its many forms is a manifestation of love deprived of self-transcendence. In selected intensive readings of the Inferno, the Master Class will be dedicated to the question of how Dante unveils the inner motions of the will that leads sinners to their place in Hell.

Robert Pogue Harrison is the Rosina Pierotti Professor in Italian Literature at Stanford University. He is the author of The Body of Beatrice (1988), a study on Dante’s early poetry. He has also published Forests: The Shadow of Civilization (1992), Rome, la Pluie: À quoi bon la littérature? (1994), The Dominion of the Dead (2003), Gardens. An Essay on the Human Condition (2008) and, most recently, Juvenescence. A Cultural History of Our Age (2014). His books have been translated into French, Italian, German, and Japanese. Professor Harrison is lead guitarist for the cerebral rock band Glass Wave and hosts Entitled Opinions, a literary talk show on KZSU, Stanford’s campus radio.
