In the 20th Annual Conference of the ACBLPE (Association of Portuguese- and Spanish-lexified Creoles: http://www.acblpe.com/), which is about to begin, we will discuss the continuity between the different results of contact-induced language restructuring (ranging from second language acquisition and interlanguage fossilization processes to creolization, and from code-switching phenomena and different types of lexical borrowing to the formation of mixed languages). Similarly, we will address the continuity between contact linguistics and related domains (anthropology, sociology, and population genetics). A further area of interest is the historical configuration of (Ibero-)creolistics as a linguistic (sub)discipline, one which can be regarded as more or less autonomous and is generally situated at a crossroads between different research areas like Romance, African and Austronesian studies.

This Conference will be held in person. The “prelude” (on the 7th) and the General Assembly for ACBLPE members will be held in hybrid format.

We have more than 70 participants, including the following Keynote Speakers:

Peter Bakker (University of Aarhus): “Why do we have diverse and abundant Spanish pidgins but few Spanish creoles, in contrast to few Portuguese pidgins and many and diverse Portuguese creoles?”
John M. Lipski (Penn State): “Does the ‘half’ language Media Lengua have a half-life? Empirical approaches to the study of Media Lengua stability”
Nicolas Quint (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique): “Mapping diatopic variation in Upper-Guinea. Some preliminary results”
and
Armin Schwegler’s Abschiedsvorlesung: “A century of accelerating social and linguistic changes in Palenque (Colombia): A reassessment with a view towards the future”
